If you want to start a laundromat business from scratch as opposed to buying a laundromat business, be prepared for a significant amount of initial overhead. Fortunately, the laundromat business is one of the few ones that will actually pay for themselves in the end without requiring a lot of overhead and extra expenses.

When you first acquire a laundromat service, it’s imperative that you secure property with lots of parking, a good amount of floor space, and easy-to-access utility hookups. The necessary equipment you will need includes the coin-operated or card-reading washers, dryers, washer-extractors. Washer-extractors are washing machines that spin at super fast speeds which help to remove stains and soiling in fabric.

In the era of modern computing devices, coin-operated machines may seem outdated; however, they offer more “security” and are cheaper than the card-reading machines (machines that read a card with a microchip in it). They also require more investment of your time as the coins must be emptied and the change machines refilled. The cart-reading machines require less work, but can be hacked by someone with a card reader (the person can add to the balance with a computer). Besides having the actual washing and drying machinery, you will also need tables and dedicated areas for customers to fold and sort their laundry, a bathroom, a sink for people to hand-wash particular items, a change machine, and a snack machine, and even a arcade machine or two.

It’s important to profile your customer base and tailor your laundromat to the specific type of customers most frequenting your establishment. If your laundromat is by a college, you should make sure it’s located close to the school to include things such as study tables, etc. If your laundromat is located in a residential area, you need to make sure there are things for the kids to do while they wait for their parents to finish the laundry. It’s important to consider the needs of your specific customer base before building a laundromat service. If you are buying a laundromat business, then the previous owner has probably already shaped the laundromat business to cater towards the market; however, if not it’s worth spending some serious time thinking of ways you can optimize the business for the customer base.

If you have chosen the right location, purchased the needed equipment, and tailored the laundromat to the particular location/customer base, the laundromat business will begin to pay for itself shortly. Once you have established a regular customer base, your business will begin to pay for itself and make money each and every day.

Starting or buying a laundromat business is a great way to make fairly easy money. The stress and management level is low, and unless you have a very large laundromat, it’s entirely possible for you yourself to solely manage and operate the business. Buying a laundromat may be the key to a successful and relaxing career.
